HOME DELIVERED MEALS PROGRAM

Meal Menu Calendar

For over three decades, Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula's Home-Delivered Meals Program has been dedicated to serving those who cannot serve themselves, whose independence would be jeopardized without assistance. Meals on Wheels' provides tasty, nutritious meals to the homebound elderly. Volunteer drivers monitor their well-being which in turn helps them maintain their independence, safety, health and dignity.

Good diet is important:
Making food appealing and nutritious is the goal of both our dining programs. Research shows that you can't skimp on essential nutrients. Thus we follow the recommended guidelines established by the state of California. Our menus are reviewed by the County's Area Agency on Aging dietitian.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Eligibility is determined by a homebound individual's inability to shop or cook to meet nutritional requirements for an older adult. A short intake form can be completed over the phone in just a few minutes. Individuals under 60 require a doctor's referral.

WHAT AREA IS COVERED?
Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula delivers nutritious meals to qualifying recipients throughout the Monterey Peninsula, from Marina to the North to Carmel Highlands to the South, and to Carmel Valley to the East.

WHAT TIME IS FOOD DELIVERED?
Deliveries are made five days a week Monday through Friday between 10:30 and 12:30. Friday's delivery also contains food for the weekend if requested and a frozen meal is sent with delivery the day before a holiday.

WHAT KIND OF FOOD?
Each delivery contains three meals, which provide 2/3 of USDA recommended daily allowance of nutrients for older adults. They are delivered in containers that can be refrigerated or heated in a microwave. Monthly menus are provided.

WHAT DOES IT COST?
A donation of Five Dollars a day is suggested to help cover client share of cost. The actual cost of providing each daily meal delivery is over Eleven Dollars. If the recipient can afford a greater donation, it is appreciated. If individuals cannot afford the requested donation, a reduced amount may be arranged and/or they may be offered a financial sponsorship from the "Investment in Independence Program". (see below) No one is turned away for lack of financial ability to pay.

Financial Assistance
A modest donation is requested for the three meals a day. The Investment in Independence Sponsorship Program offers financial "scholarships" to clients with low incomes enabling them to receive a healthful diet, pay for medication, rent and retain personal dignity and independence. No one is turned away for lack of financial ability to pay.

WHO CAN MAKE REFERRALS TO REQUEST A MEAL?
Meals on Wheels receives referrals from the local health community, senior service providers, senior organizations, concerned family members, friends or neighbors. Volunteer drivers who deliver the food also monitor clients' well being and safety. If assistance is needed MOW staff will make the necessary referrals and follow-up and support. Volunteers are the" windows to the world" for many homebound individuals who have no other social contact.
