Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula

Volunteer Descriptions

 

Position: Home Delivered Meal Driver

Time Commitment: Average is one time per week. Some volunteers are on call.

Average route takes 1 to 1.5 hours.

What is needed: Own vehicle, fuel (we do not reimburse for mileage), automobile insurance, clean driving record.  A familiarity with the peninsula is helpful.

Description: Drivers report to the Meals on Wheels facility at 700 Jewell Ave. in

Pacific Grove in the morning between 9:30a.m. and 10:30a.m.

There they pick up prepackaged meals for 5 to 15 clients. Meals are delivered and transport equipment is returned to Meals on Wheels.

Training: Prospective drivers are invited to go out on a route with a veteran driver.

Basic orientation is provided covering safe food handling and work place safety.

During the year in-services are provided to address client issues and concerns.

 

Position: Food Service Assistant

Time Commitment: Average is one to two times per week. Average shift is 2 to 4 hours. 

What is needed: Good health and physical condition. Ability to stand and work on feet for an hour plus, do repetitive motions, lift up to 10 to 15 lbs.

Description: Food service volunteers assist in all areas of our food service from food preparation to serving in the dining room, to helping “cater” special agency events.

Experience working with food and in a kitchen is helpful, but not necessary.

Training: Basic orientation is provided covering safe food handling and work place safety.  “On the job” training is provided per the needs of each position.

During the year in-services are provided to address related topics.

 

Position: Administrative Support

Including office receptionist, special projects i.e. mailings, database updates.

Time Commitment: Average is one time per week and/or on-call. Shifts 4 hours.

What is needed: The ability to hear and communicate clearly and effectively is extremely important. Basic office skills are helpful: phone, typing, computer, office equipment, etc.  A desire to work with the public in also very important.

Description: Administrative Support volunteers help in many aspects of the daily operation of our agency.  These volunteers are good with diverse populations and work closely with staff to serve the needs of clients and participants.  These positions require an ability to work in very busy, sometimes noisy environment and have the ability to multi-task and still keep a smile going.

Training: “On the job” training is provided per the needs of each position.  During the year in-services are provide to address related topics.

 

Position: Sally Griffin Support

Including dining room hosts, center receptionist, special event assistance, etc.

Time Commitment: Average one to two time per week., 2-4 hours+.

What is needed: : The ability to hear and communicate clearly and effectively is extremely important. A desire to work with the public in also very important.

Description: These volunteers are good with diverse populations and work closely with staff to serve the needs of clients and participants.  These positions require an ability to work in very busy, sometimes noisy environment and have the ability to multi-task and still keep a smile going.

Training: “On the job” training is provided per the needs of each position.  During the year in-services are provide to address related topics.
