Since 1972, Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula has been delivering freshly prepared, nutritious home delivered meals to meet the complex nutritional needs of seniors, veterans and disabled homebound adults who cannot shop or cook for themselves and have no adult caregiver in the home. This program enables our clients to remain in their own homes with a high quality of life for as long as possible.

The Home Delivered Meals program is the only program on the Monterey Peninsula to deliver nutritious meals every day, five days per week, with an extra Friday meal for the weekend. Per federal contract, our meals meet rigorous national guidelines for healthy senior nutrition.

Telephone Reassurance - A phone call from our inner-office volunteers can mean the world to a homebound senior. And just as importantly, that call can also serve as a vital wellness check to keep them safe.

The program is served by over 250 volunteer drivers/driver teams. Drivers clock over 21,800 miles per year to deliver meals, a friendly smile, conversation and a check on our clients' well-being to help them maintain independence, safety, health and dignity.

ELIGIBILITY

Our Home Delivered Meal Program serves seniors, disabled adults, and veterans age 60 and older who are homebound and have limited access to shopping and preparing meals on a consistent basis.

DELIVERY TIME

Deliveries are made Monday through Friday typically between 10:00 a.m. and noon. We are closed Saturdays and Sundays, and some holidays.

TYPICAL DELIVERY

Each delivery (varies daily) includes items for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Daily meals include milk, cereal, juice, fresh fruit, a freshly prepared hot entrée, soup or salad, a sandwich and a dessert. The hot entrée includes one protein, one vegetable and at least 600 calories. On Fridays, MOWMP offers a double meal that provides food for one day of the weekend.

Our menu changes each month and is reviewed by a dietitian to meet the nutritional needs of older adults. We are working on vegetarian and diabetic menus – watch for these exciting changes coming soon.

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTION FOR SERVICE

Voluntary contributions from clients help defray the cost of the meals and ensure we can continue to provide our services. At the beginning of each month, we send out a statement indicating the number of deliveries made to each client during the prior month. We invite clients to contribute to Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula based on what they can afford. This is voluntary, there is no obligation to contribute. No eligible individual shall be denied participation because of inability to contribute. In the agency's long history, no client has ever been turned away.

PET MEALS DELIVERY PROGRAM

This program helps ensure that seniors' pets don't go hungry by including pet food along with home-delivered meals. The SPCA of Monterey County supports this program for our home delivered meal clients who have cats, dogs or birds. We supply a pet meal application to each of our new clients.

HOME HEART HEROES PROGRAM

Through small-scale repairs and upgrades, local homebound seniors, disabled adults, and veterans can improve the safety and mobility in their homes and reduce the risk of falls and other common injuries, allowing them to age-in-place longer.
